What is a regex?

Regular Expressions are descriptions of text. For example, the words “text”, “test”, “trees” have something in common: They start with a “t” and somewhere in the word there’s an “e”. The respective regex pattern would be ^t.*e:

These patterns are useful for programmers, because they often search for something in their code files they only have a vague memory of. Another example could be something that is shaped like an address, so first there are letters, then numbers, then a linebreak, then again numbers, and then text.. But it’s also fun for games.
